Tiger – Stained Glass Project

My Blue-Eye Tiger

My Blue-Eye Tiger by Evelyn Lim

While learning how to create glass jewelry, I got intrigued by stained glass at the same time.

You don’t have to be a great artist to create a stained glass design.

Here is a Simple Way to Design a Stained Glass Project that I wish to share with you.

I created my design by selecting a photograph of the tiger from the internet, enlarged and printed it on A4-size paper. I taped the corners of this copy on my window pane. The light coming through the window gave a see-through that is perfect for tracing.

By placing another A4 paper over the print, I traced the outlines with a pencil. Starting from the edges and included some distinctive features like the eyes, the nose, ears and some stripes and it’s done!

To refine the design, compare it with the photograph, smooth the contours and add a few more lines to get the right number of contrasting color segments. For a beginner, the ideal number of segments should not exceed 30 pieces. Otherwise it will require more time and patience to complete the project.

This will be your individualistic approach to a design that is uniquely you.
The rest is stained glass technique!

Of course, if you prefer something run-off-the-mill, you can find ready templates from the internet and the library.

HDMI, What is HDMI? Not An Inkling.

What is HDMI ?  Not an inkling. I do not know what is it until I watched this video.

HDMI Digital Video Home Theater Connections

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is the latest and greatest digital audio/video cable connection and can give you great HDTV resolution. Besides HDTVs, HDMI is being included in a variety of devices these days, including DVD players, cable and satellite set-top boxes, Media Center Edition PCs, and the Sony PlayStation 3 gaming console.

What’s so great about HDMI? It’s all-digital, high-bandwidth, supports all variants of HDTV and carry up to eight channels of digital audio.  HDMI is also fully backward compatible with DVI.

HDMI cables don’t have to be super-expensive. In fact, certified HDMI cables can be relatively cheap, and there are many good online sources.

If you’re shopping for a new TV, a new receiver, or a new DVD player, or choosing an HDTV set-top box or satellite receiver, go with HDMI if you can. HDMI can provide the highest quality video signal and throws your multichannel surround sound audio in on the same cable. You really can’t go wrong here.

Moving Out Of Our Comfort Zone

We gave up our apartment in the South Western part of Singapore where we got very comfortable with the sights and familiar faces in the neighborhood.  The facilities were almost at our doorstep. The market, the hawker center, the Community Club, coffee shops and schools.  We could see the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) track beyond the block next to ours. Out of our balcony, a beautiful view of greenery next to the canal beside the MRT.  Real estate prices were at rock bottom back then in 2005.

Our apartment block was almost 30 years old when the government slated it for major upgrading, and transformed it into a condominium style apartment.  Naturally the value appreciated and the expected demand created an opportunity for us to sell the unit and buy private housing.  It was a very difficult decision, especially when we wished for nothing less.

It was scary to face all the hassle and uncertainty.  My husband and daughter were reluctant to give in.  Our budget was very tight, but we were lucky to get an experienced and caring real estate agent to handle the selling smoothly and another agent to process the purchase at the same time.  We held our breath.

Today, we are living further West, enjoying additional facilities, in a 10 year old condominium.  There is a swimming pool, the gym and a lush garden.  I can still see the MRT in the horizon.  We moved out of our comfort zone, and found another.

Building Self Esteem

When my daughter asked me to send her to Geylang Lorong 23, I gasped!
Geylang is a famous red light district in Singapore.  It is definitely not safe for a girl to go there at night.  She reassured me that her project team had done their research, and all 9 of them will take all precautions, stay close together and watch over each other.

For the first time, I come to know about the HighPoint Halfway House and the good work that was done for ex-offenders to help them reintegrate back into society.  Male ex-offenders who have completed their addiction treatment can apply to join a residential rehabilitation program to undergo counseling and on-the-job-training.

As most of the residents were working in the day,  the 3-session workshop was conducted at night. The workshop theme was to help build self esteem.  Not only the residents benefited from this project, I believe these young volunteers also learned a great deal on  teamwork and leadership skills.
